Barriers Support Social Distancing – the Most Effective Pandemic Response

During the first half of 2020, most individuals have become familiar with the concept of social distancing. Also called “physical distancing,” social distancing involves maintaining space between yourself and other individuals (typically, those that don’t live in your home).

Along with cloth face coverings and frequent hand washing, practicing social distancing is the best way to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Unfortunately, close contact isn’t easily avoidable in all situations. Public restrooms present social distancing challenges with their closely spaced urinals, sinks, and hand dryers. Tight quarters in bathrooms aren’t desirable but are understandable. The higher density allows more individuals to use the facility simultaneously, which is especially important in large offices, sports venues, and public buildings.

In these situations where social distancing isn’t practical, physical barriers can limit people’s exposure to each other. Scranton Products manufactures a series of products designed for this purpose.

Privacy Barriers and Health Barriers from Scranton Products

Scranton Products designed this series of larger barriers to provide increased protection and privacy between urinals, sinks, and hand dryers. Scranton Products’ manufactures its barriers from HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Also called “solid plastic,” it is naturally germ resistant. This makes HDPE an ideal material for physical barriers in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. In laboratory testing (conducted by SiTU Biosciences LLC, using ISO 22196 methods), 98.4% of sample bacteria deposited on the surface of HDPE plastic died within 24 hours, without any cleaning. Solid plastic also resists mold, mildew, and odors.

Occupancy is Increased, Reducing Lines and Waiting

Because Health Barriers allow all urinals, sinks, and hand dryers to remain usable, public restrooms can accommodate their maximum number of users. Increased occupancy limits the formation of lines and reduces waiting during periods of heavy use.

Health Barriers Mean No Waiting for Handwashing, Reducing Time in Restroom

Waiting lines outside bathrooms are no fun, but lines inside them are even worse! Dividers between sinks let facilities use their full complement of stations (even those closer than six feet apart). In simple terms, sink dividers help avoid hand washing bottlenecks. Fewer bottlenecks mean less time spent in an enclosed space near others – a significant aspect of social distancing.

Fully Utilize Existing Urinals, Sinks, and Hand Dryers

For many building owners and operators, commercial plumbing fixtures and washroom accessories represent a significant investment. Use Scranton Products’ Health Barriers to fully-realize the potential of existing public restroom spaces – even during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Greater access to existing sinks and hand dryers also benefits the overall hygiene of building occupants and visitors.

HDPE, a Safe and Dependable Material, Easily Cleaned

Solid plastic (high-density polyethylene) is an ideal material for Health Barriers. Unlike many other materials, HDPE will never serve as a breeding ground for mold, mildew, or bacteria. Because of this, it will also remain odor-free its entire useful life.

Powder-coated steel (and some varieties of stainless steel) will eventually rust in damp environments. Being hollow, it also has the potential to trap liquids. Laminated wood products are susceptible to moisture. Damp particleboard quickly swells and eventually sheds its outer layer. Moist wood fibers are an excellent breeding ground for microorganisms.
